What would it look like if a giant comet hit earth. We will never know. That has been one of my greatest challenges when creating this. It did take some time. The most I think I have ever worked on a piece of digital artwork. I looked at a lot of reference pictures that I found. But all are created from simulations. I guessed that our atmosphere would be swept away in the initial seconds as would the water down to the ocean floor given the velocity of pressure pressed against our earth. It would get dark as the comet caused a few seconds of shade from the sun. And then...

I used UIC for the planet and stars. I used the UIC plugins galaxy for the ice particles. I used Bryce 5 for the first time to create the chunks of comet. Then I spent the next 21 days adding layers of smudge and air brush to create waves and clouds. I hope you like it.
