UIC Image Contest Winners & Entries for July/August 2005
Theme: "Second
star to the right, and straight on 'til morning"
Best Overall goes to "Childhood Dreams" by Karla Munger....$25 Prize
A comment from our judge...
This embodies the theme perfectly. The use of character from the classic story, dreamy, reflective planet, pixie-dust, and all come together to make it clear we're looking at Neverland from space and are being greeted. I applaud the classical tie-in of story character and focus on the contest theme. It captures a great deal of the spirit of the theme in a single image - for that it is awarded 'Best Overall.'

Best Use of Color goes to “Squaricio Nel Vuoto” By Dainotti Edoardo....$10 Prize
A comment from our judge...
This has earmarks of fitting the 'most original' category. However, it was the vibrant array of color that grabs attention each viewing. Bringing such a palette together in once piece is a risk - but this piece handles it very well. The striations and banding, the fading and splashing of color... it's a piece one can get lost in while viewing any one portion of it.

Most Original goes to “SOTM Entry” by Bebo.....$10 Prize
A comment from our judge...
It does my heart good to see the clever references... SOTM - Straight on till morning, the second star to the right... I can see it just off in the distance... the rocketship SOTM is a character unto itself. What a wonderful way to portray a theme in an unusual way - but stay true to exploration, and space art. The uniqueness but attention to theme work very well together to earn "SOTM Entry" the 'Most Original' prize.

Honorable Mention goes to “Checkmate” by Abdul Hakim Akhira.....$10 Prize
A comment from our judge...
Perhaps a bit of a departure from theme, but certainly suggestive of a far off place of awe and wonder. "Checkmate" is composed well and balanced, it shows a dynamic scene with good point of view. It's enjoyable to look at the action as it is caught unfolding and makes the mind ponder what will happen after this moment. A good piece receiving 'Honorable Mention.'

The theme of this month's contest conjures thoughts of fantasy. "What would Neverland look like from space?" ...it's fantasy, it's a dream, it's a far away place seen through a unique perspective. "Planets" fits all of that. Giving full credit to technical consistency in shading and light source, this is also a well balanced and composed piece in the new Junior division. It twinkles, it's full of glowing colors, and suggests a planetary system where Neverland could be found. Well done.
