Theme: "A Galaxy Far, Far Away..."
Best Overall goes to "Destination" by Jason M. Warren....$25 Prize
A comment from our judge...
"Destination" is a strong piece. It ties warm colors together but gives enough separation with use of highlights, star flares, and glow. One almost might feel that the planet looks a little familiar - but the backdrop of the well-crafted galaxy behind makes it clear "this is nowhere close." The probe completely suggests travel and exploration - something very much appropriate to the spirit of space art. The composition is balanced and gives focus to the important elements very well. This has just enough hint of the realistic and fantastic combined to be a great representation of other galaxies, new worlds, and places we might yet explore.

Best Use of Color goes to “Sky Over Desert” By Richard Merk....$10 Prize

The first thing that catches my attention is the depth of the multi-spiraled galaxial rings - the use of shadows and contrast are well done. It's a clever take on how galaxies might converge, given enough time. In this case - "...far, far away" suggests time to me. Something that might happen in our own cosmic backyard but many years from now.
The glow of the colors set against the contrast of deeper hues is really the strong point. It makes a convincing level of dimension where you know part of those spiral arms is very near the observer, while others are far away. The cast glow of color on the landscape and night sky holds the colors from the galaxies together as well. A very nice piece.

Most Original goes to “Galaxy Core” by Bebo.....$10 Prize
A comment from our judge...
I think we get used to new representations of known stellar objects.
However, new types of galaxies always gets my attention - just as "Galaxy Core" does.
It's fascinating to imagine a part of the Universe that contains a multi-armed, multi-axis galaxy. There is good dimension conveyed with distant arms fading from view behind closer, brighter arms. It's also framed nicely with lens flare and ring. It's nice to see imagination take off with concepts in space art.

Honorable Mention goes to “Condition Red” by Karla Munger.....$10 Prize
A comment from our judge...
I didn't even need to see the title to know that this was a galaxy in turmoil. The planets appear aflame, volcanic, and in constant threat of coming apart - as does the ring of smoky, fiery galaxy behind it all.
This is certainly nowhere near our relatively peaceful corner of the galaxy. It's a good representation of a theme but with a foundation in an idea of what happens in real-life.
