Best Overall goes to "Light Echoes" by Karla Munger....$25 Prize |
A comment from our judge...
"Light Echoes" is, indeed, in no uncertain terms a fantastic nebulae. It has many subtle gradations of color within an Earthy, translucent mass. The undulating, folded layers represent some of the best, unique qualities of nebulae. There is a dimensionality but also a hard-to-define shape, typical of these stellar giants. One can see the expanding motion of the particles and gasses in what must be a huge cloud. The desire to look closer and all around it add to the viewing interest. This is well done and represents the theme and software tools equally well.

Best Use of Color
goes to “Eroding Nebula” By Atticman....$10 Prize |
A comment from our judge...
Subtle wisps of gas, vibrant and glowing color combinations, and continuous shifts in hue make "Eroding Nebula" my favorite for this category. This is the sort of piece that is best viewed on a screen because nothing else will do justice to the illumination and glow of these great colors. It looks electrified and alive. It can be difficult for some color combinations to share the same canvas space. It can be even more difficult to blend one into the other. However, this work handles both well and makes a convincing transition from one color to the next.

Most Original
goes to “Nebulous Thoughts” by Joanne Hanny.....$10 Prize |
A comment from our judge...
The artist's own comments actually hit on several points that make this a great, original piece. The multilayers of cloud billowing in that fantastic shape that only nebulae seem to be capable of, the uniqueness of the face emerging from the clouds themselves, and the altered reality of it all... a very original work of art. The technical merits exist in this piece as well with the illumination, shadowing, and highlighted accents - it has a strong three-dimensionality too it. Therefore the piece stands on its own in more than one respect.

Honorable Mention goes to “Eldritch Light” by Richard Merk.....$10 Prize |
A comment from our judge...
The "Eldritch Light" - is this suggesting a celestial cousin to our Earthly Northern or Southern lights? It's fantastic - the nebulae waves and flows like our Polar Aurora and I believe that if this were real...
this is what it would look like. As someone who has seen the Northern Lights I am taken with the colors and transitions. It is familiar and comforting. Well done.
