Best Overall goes to "Decimation" by Jason M. Warren....$25 Prize |
A comment from our judge...
"Decimation" is quite simply - dramatic!
It takes on a fantastic event and portrays it with equal energy. The skillfully worked clouds of atmosphere convey motion and distinction between layers of atmosphere with their colors. Even the striated folds of clouds from the material being thrown off by the stars is detailed and multi-layered.
In general, this is a good piece to show more than the typical fare of space art content. It's well executed and conveys physical attributes such as motion and energy, but also emotional in the drama it displays.
Well done.

Best Use of Color
goes to “Atheon” By Bobby Ray....$10 Prize |
A comment from our judge...
Another "use of color" piece that shows how bright, vivid, color - when used correctly - serves to bring a piece together rather than detract.
Overly saturated colors tend to wash away detail and visual interest but "Atheon" still makes use of dark areas and variations to keep the piece interesting. Judicious use of stars help frame and draw the focus to the planet but also serve to dress up the clouds around it. This is a very nice piece that took on an element of risk with strong colors that paid off very well.

Most Original
goes to “Moonrise” by Richard Merk.....$10 Prize |
A comment from our judge...
It's always good to see a well-crafted piece that benefits from the strong points of different sources. In this case - various graphic software programs. By themselves each element may have been simply good - but combined... the final piece is eye-catching and very interesting.
"Moonrise" captures the style of story illustration where a single image must convey a moment within the story - but not tell the entire story. I find myself wanting to know more about the people pictured in this piece and the world they are in. Piquing interest is always a good thing in art and the artist has certainly done that.

Honorable Mention goes to “Path to a Star” by Sarah E.....$10 Prize |
A comment from our judge...
I like the feeling of momentum in "Path to a Star." I feel as if I'm seeing an arm of a galaxy from a very unique point of view - and therefor the title suits this just fine. It does suggest a path of sorts leading to the center of this galaxy. The trail leading away points to a bright point that ties the whole piece together for composition. It is framed well and the emphasis on perspective is right on.
